Neurological Examination
This will include a review of the patient's medical history, with attention to the current condition / symptoms. The neurologist will test vision, hearing, ability to taste / smell, strength. coordination, reflexes, sensation, and gait. This information along with the diagnostic testing such as lab work, EEG, EMG/NCS, TCD, CT or MRI helps the neurologist determine the specific problem. The neurologist may also request input from a cardiologist, psychiatrist or psychologist in some cases to better understand any compounding factor to the patient's symptoms.
Dr. Malik administers and interprets the results of neurological testing procedures. He then discusses diagnostic test results with the patient and recommends the appropriate treatment, medication, or therapy and follows the patient at intervals to determine their progress or if another treatment plan may be necessary.
Certain medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension or metabolic imbalances may affect the nervous system. The neurologist may discuss these issues with the patient's primary care physician in regard to better control of blood pressure, blood sugar and adjustment of medications. The doctors working together along with the patient's willingness to follow up on recommendations and treatment plans make it possible to alleviate the patient's discomfort from many neurological illnesses.
